What Is "Creative"?

Getting Started

This unit is not a comprehensive look at what creativity is, but rather aims to provoke you into thinking about what creativity is.
The unit will not give a definition of creativity, but at the end, you will be asked to write your own definition.

We can all recognize creativity, but it is hard to say, exactly what it is. Watch the two videos below. Are they creative?

If you think they are creative, why?
Often we think only the arts are truely creative, but this is very misleading.
Potentially any artifact, act or process can be creative.
Think about this famous physics equation:

E=mc2

Does it represent creativity? What does it mean?
Is Kelvin Doe creative?

Spend some time now thinking and reading about creativity. What do you think it is?

In this unit you have hopefully had a chance to think and learn a lot about creativity.
Hopefully you are now able to define what creativity is.
Using Photo Booth, record a one-minute video of yourself answering the following two questions:

What is creativity?
How can we recognize creativity?

You do not need to talk in depth, but rather show a broad understanding of creativity.

(Optional) Our challenge to you is to see if you can not just answer these questions, but to tell it to us in a creative way. Use your imagination to see if you can come up with an interesting and creative way to share your thoughts in your video. Try to amaze or surprise us!

When you've completed your video, upload it to Google Drive, share it, and submit the link to this unit as evidence of your learning. We look forward to seeing what you create.

Since I don't enjoy recording, I decided to use a virtual piano website to share my thoughts. I realise I have gone off track near the ending. I've also learned that culture and technology can effect the if people think the work/piece of art is creative or not. I found this unit and the videos interesting and enjoyed this experience. Teacher Comment Jessie and friends, well done on a really excellent piece of writing that gives a clear definition of creativity, and shows you have thought deeply about this most human of things. Your piece on technology and AI is interesting, but there is another way to view this issue: if technology makes creativity easier, is it still creativity? Is it still valuable? One area of culture you have not considered is the law: copyright law, which is part of culture, can both promote and hinder technology. To what extent do we want to use such laws to promote profit making, versus creativity and individual freedom? Great work here : )

Art classes, English classes, classes in general kind of bred these thoughts - I was definitely given the opportunity to be creative myself, which gave me things to reflect on when doing the writeup. Anyways, this unit helped me actually think properly about creativity and consolidate those ideas I had half-formed in the past. Side note - I've been wondering if I'll be able to direct my own learning when I leave school - will not having organised resources hinder my learning? Or free it? Teacher Comment Joe, very well done on a great unit, in which you have clearly done some deep thinking. Your reflective piece, answering the questions at the end of the unit, raises some very valid and interesting points. You clearly have spent quite some energy thinking about this. I agree with your assertion that humans are "programmed" by their circumstances, and create on that basis. So, although it is uncomfortable with the idea that a computer can be creative. Perhaps we need to redefine creativity as making that goes against our programming...and so is different. Of course, we cannot escape our cultural programming...we would be wild beasts without it. Isaac Newton claimed he was merely "standing on the shoulders of giants" when he created his work, showing his understand of the importance of his predecessors. Very humble! I like your stand against the tyranny of those who currently control creativity, and have a corporate/ego incentive to keep it exclusive. As if they are special in a way no one else is. They might have had more practice, but most are not possessing of any special "gift". Also, the video you linked to was really interesting...there is a similar one, where they 3D print the evolved creatures, attach a motor, and then they walk off (very scarily). In terms of your final comment...some people find that they lose confidence when the scaffold of school is removed. Others feel liberated by the freedom, and supported by what they have learned. I guess you will fit into the second group. Very well done!
