Express Your Frustration
The Pitch
  • Do you feel strongly about something important? Perhaps it is the inability of politicians to tackle important matters, such as climate change or universal suffrage.
  • Do you want to express your frustration? A satirical remix might be the thing for you.
  • In this unit you will create a remix of existing media to make a statement lampoon something.

What Is Satire?
Theory
  • According to Wikipedia: "Satire is a genre of literature, and sometimes graphic and performing arts, in which vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government or society itself, into improvement.[1] Although satire is usually meant to be humorous, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit to draw attention to both particular and wider issues in society." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satire
  • An example of print-based satire, which exposes politicians and those in power as being corrupt:

  • An example of video-based satire, which makes fun of the arguments used by gun supporters, showing them to be flawed and ridiculous:

Your Form?
Theory & Planning
  • In order to communicate effectively, you need to understand and apply the following:

Purpose + Audience = Form

  • This means that your communications form (what it looks, sounds and feels like, it's genre) needs to match up with your purpose (what you want to achieve) and your audience (who you want to appeal to, who will view your work).
  • Spend some time now thinking about your purpose and audience, and how this will inform the form of your work.
  • You may want to spend some time studying satire online.

Planning
Think & Search
  • Spend some time now to staring thinking about what media you are going to use to make your remix, and how it might be sequenced together.
  • The more time you spend planning, the more effective your production time will be: it is worth slowing down here to make sure everything is ready before you jump into iMovie and start editing.
  • As part of your planning you may want to consider making a storyboard, to help you visualise your final product: you can do this online with Storyboard That.
  • When you are ready, move onto the next step.

Production
Hands On
  • Work now on producing your satirical remix, most likely using iMove, although you can use other software if you prefer
  • If you're on a Chromebook, use WeVideo
  • You might need to work through a sequence like this:
    • Get your media - rip from DVD, download from YouTube, etc.
    • Import your media - into your video editor
    • Cut your media - to get the sections you need, and delete what you don't want.
    • Arrange your media - to get things into the right order
    • Add text and transitions - don't go over the top, and try to avoid the default templates, as these look quite amateurish. Make your own font styles, import your own background, etc.
    • Audio editing - detach audio from clips where you do not want the audio, and music and voice over, etc.
    • Add credits - to show who made it, and where the media came from.
  • As you produce, get feedback from your peers and teachers to see what you can improve.
  • Remember, it takes time to make a quality video production, so make it short but polished. Quality over quantity!
