What is basketball? Basketball is pure magic on hardwood - two teams battle up and down the court, trying to swish the ball through the hoop more than their opponents. Techniques and Positions

Basketball has many techniques and positions. Techniques would involve things like pick and rolls or man to man defence which is also known as schemes. From the first video you would’ve learnt about the starting 5, the starting 5 players that go on the court before the other players. Starters are also usually the best players.

The 5 positions are called:

  • The 1: Point guard, point guards are usually the smallest player on the team, but the fastest too, a great point guard you probably know is Stephen Curry.

  • The 2: Shooting guard, shooting guards are great shooters and played offensively most of the time, a great shooting guard you probably know is Kobe Bryant.

  • The 3: Small forward, small forwards are usually good in handles, good offensively, but also a smaller defensive player, making them good at bits of everything, a great Small forward you probably know is Lebron James.

  • The 4: Power forward, a big man, can shoot up close, collects rebounds and great at defence, a great Power forward you probably know is Giannis Antetokounmpo

  • The 5: Center, the biggest man on the team, goes for the dunks, strongest and usually great at jumping, a great Center you probably know is Shaquille O’neal.

Develop your Game

What is the right way to shoot? Many beginners shoot from their chest with both hands, what if I told you that that is the wrong way to shoot! Shooting with good form requires you to have 1 hand to hold the ball steady, another hand to flick and accurately shoot the ball into the hoop!

Handles

Handles are another way to say “controlling the ball” Some cool handle tricks are things like through the legs, behind the back and more, these moves help trick your opponents and the faster and better you become at handles the better you become at the game!

Watch this video to get great handles:

Practice

Spend 15 minutes with a basketball and practise different moves, see what mistakes you made and what you learnt to do, note this stuff down and learn how to improve.

With a partner, challenge them to a 1v1 to practise your skills on real people!

Evidence

Together with your partner, on PhotoBooth make a 3-5 minute video on what you learned throughout this journey, what was difficult, what you could’ve done better, why you like or dislike the game and just your thoughts in general! Also include clips of your progress throughout.
