Outline

The Pitch
Why should I bother learning this?
  • Mastering your laptop, and a few basic tools, is your key to becoming a faster, better, smarter and more organised learner.
Resources
What is needed to run this unit?
  • Mac laptop or computer (the theory applies to any type of machine, but the examples are Mac specific).
  • Internet access
  • Email account for signing up to free online services
Interdisciplinary Links
Do not try and force this. What areas of other subjects might this reflect and/discuss language. For IB, links with ToK.
  • The unit is a foundation for other subjects to use in terms of student learning skills.
  • Links to Library/information literacy skills.
Teacher Reflection
What was successful? What needs changing? Alternative Assessments and Lesson Ideas? What other Differentiation Ideas/Plans could be used?

Want To Be A Tech Ninja?
The Pitch

So, you've got a laptop...now what? In this unit we will look at how you can use technology to become a faster, better, smarter learner. This is what I call being a Tech Ninja.

4 Tools
Beyond Mac/Beyond Chromebook
  • Let's now look at 4 tools you can use to get more organised.
  • You can drag and drop the images below into Google Images, or use other search methods, to identify and learn more about each one:
    • Some might be installed on your computer, others are on the web. Some are both!
    • Try to locate and use each of these programmes, and consider how you might use them to support your learning.
  • If you need to set up an account for any of these four apps, please do so with your @ichk.edu.hk account.
    • For other units, and generally at school, before setting up a new account on a new service in school, check with your teacher to see if it is OK, and always use your @ichk.edu.hk email address.

Web Search
Master The Web
  • Searching the web seems easy to start with, but it is sometimes hard to find the things you want.
  • Let's use these videos to help us start thinking about search:

  • Once you feel you are more comfortable searching, challenge yourself with A Google A Day.
  • If you really like A Google A Day, try a bunch of similar challenges in one go.
  • If you think you might be a real web search nerd, the following video goes into some detail about how Google works. Watch it if you like!

Wrapping Up
Giving Evidence
  • Look back through the things you have learned in this unit. What kind of evidence can you give to show where you have been and what you have done?
  • Produce something like one of the ideas listed below, or something of your own choosing, to showcase your learning:
    • A short article giving your thoughts on the 4 tools you tried, including:
      • Title
      • Your name as author
      • An introduction outlining what this article is about.
      • A section on each app, including a screenshot and maybe a link to the app's website
      • A conclusion on which app is your favourite.
    • A 2-minute monologue video where you record yourself talking about what you have learned.
    • A short video clip of you teaching one of your parents what you have learned.
