How Do We Develop?
Theory
  • There are many ways to view, model and understand human development.
  • The model we often use in school is Erik Erickson's Stages of Psycho-Social Development, which is outlined in the table below (click to see a larger version):

  • Take some time now to watch the following student-produced video, which goes into more detail about the various stages. It is not perfect, but gives lots of useful detail.

  • For much of your student life at ICHK, you will most likely be working to resolve the Identity vs Role Confusion conflict of Stage 5.

Stage 5
  • Identity involves having a clear sense of who you are, what you like and what you believe in.
  • Identity is tricky, as it often involves trying to do two opposing things:
    • Blending in and
    • Standing out
  • Forming your own identity also often means questioning the values and views of your parents, and adopting your own ideas, which might bring you into conflict with them
    • This is part of getting ready to be an independent adult.
  • The video below is fast, and covers stages 5-8, but it gives some interesting insights into stage 5 and what identity is. Watch as much as you feel you need, to get a handle on identity.

  • Spend some time now quickly jotting down a list of words that describe your identity.
  • You don't need to share these with anyone, and they don't need to be neat: just get your thoughts down before moving onto the next step.

Graphic Design
  • Giving yourself some time to go into depth, and produce a work that does you justice, work now to create an identity montage: that is, a single image, made up of lots of other images, that showcases who you believe you are, and what is important to you.
  • The example below is not perfect, but it provides a good deal of information about the author:

  • Don't worry about using Creative Commons, or giving credit: this is not a piece of work for publication, but rather a way for you to think about your own identity.
  • Once your work is ready, submit it to this unit as evidence of your learning in this unit.
  • Hopefully, through this unit, you have come to understand:
    • How humans develop over time
    • What identity is
    • Some aspects of your own, developing identity.
