Outline

The Pitch
Why should I bother learning this?
  • Like an unlimited Lego set, Minecraft makes you the God of your own world.
  • Build anything you like, all from poorly rendered blocks.
  • Yeah!
Resources
What is needed to run this unit?
  • Laptop
  • Internet access
  • Paid Mojang account (school has a few, but you might need to buy your own)
Interdisciplinary Links
Do not try and force this. What areas of other subjects might this reflect and/discuss language. For IB, links with ToK.
Teacher Reflection
What was successful? What needs changing? Alternative Assessments and Lesson Ideas? What other Differentiation Ideas/Plans could be used?

Getting Started
Legal Account
  • To undertake this unit you must have legal access to Minecraft, which involves downloading the MC app and having a Mojang account.
    • This unit is macOS-only, and for this you can download Java Edition from Mojang's website
    • If you are using a Chromebook, you can sign out either of the follow two Mac's from school to use: MBP00358 and MBP00359.
  • If you don't have a Mojang account, the school can give you access to one, but our stock is limited.
  • Make sure you are all set up and ready to go before moving on.

MC Basics
Hands On
  • If you are already a seasoned Minecraft player, skip this section and move on to something that challenges you.
  • Your first goal is to master the controls of Minecraft. The best way to do this is in creative mode, as there are no threats or enemies. To get started:

  • Once you have created your world, learn to play! The video below might help:

Build Something
Get Creative
  • Now that you have the basics down, it is time to build something.
  • Build anything you like! One example would be to terraform some flat ground, and then build a house, complete with windows, doors, stairs, etc.
70 mins
Survival
More Experience
  • Now that you have some more experience, make a new world, but this time set it to Survival mode.
  • Spend this time getting better a Minecraft, and thinking about the difference between survival and creative modes.

Evidence
Finishing Up
  • Your goal now is to make a 1-2 minute video introducing Minecraft to newcomers. This should include a description of what Minecraft is, why it is awesome, the game modes, getting started and basic controls. Use voice over and (optionally) picture in picture to make your video awesome. It should also include some of your own crafting, so you can show what you have learned.
  • Submit your completed video as evidence for this unit.
