What is a Typewriter?
Introduction
  • Before computers, humans used typewriters in order to create neat documents quickly. In this unit you will learn about, and get to use, a typewriter.
  • Like all popular technologies, typewriters changed over time:

  • The second image shows an Olympia Carrera de Luxe, which is a fairly modern typewriter, and the model we have in school.
  • Typewriters are fun to use because they are mechanical: you can see how they work, and then make a cool noise.

Olympia Carrera de Luxe
Manual
  • Before you starting typing, spend some time reading the Olympia Carrera de Luxe user manual.
  • When you think you know how to do the following, approach your teacher to get permission to start typing:
    • Turn the machine on
    • Load a sheet of paper
    • Type
    • Correct mistakes
    • Unload a sheet of paper

Typing
Evidence
  • Now that you are ready, load up a fresh sheet of A4 paper, and type a letter to someone you know.
  • Try and make it interesting, and think it through before you type.
  • Aim to use one sheet of A4 paper, making as few mistakes as you can.
  • Submit a scan or photo of your work as evidence of your learning.
