Blurb

You've struggled through App Design 101, working with App Inventor. You like making apps, but want something richer and more rewarding. In this unit you will use Game Salad to make a gaming app, and it should be a lot of fun.

Outline

The Pitch
Why should I bother learning this?
  • You love making apps, but you found App Inventor unrewarding.
  • You want to build gaming apps with better physics and interactions, that run on any platform.
  • It sounds like Game Salad might be the platform for you.

Better App Building
The Pitch

Learnig Game Salad
Hands On
  • To get started, download Game Salad Creator and install it on your laptop.
  • Now watch the video below, and work along with it, building the same app as the presenter. Take as long as you need to do this, but try to make sure your app works.

  • Once your app is ready preview it on your mobile device, and ask your friends to try it.
Building Your Game
The Real Deal
  • Now you know a little about Game Salad, spend some time thinking about what kind of game you will build, what it will be called, how it will be played, where you will get graphics/sounds from, etc.
  • Once you have a good idea about your app, starting building it in Game Salad.
  • Spend as much time as you need building and improving your game.
  • During development ask friends, teachers and parents to try it and give you feedback: incorporate this feedback into your work.
  • Once you think the app is "finished" (nothing is really ever finished, but we can get it ready to release ; ) move onto the next section.
Game Video
Evidence
  • As evidence of your work, create a short video with the following two parts:
    1. Screenshot video of your self showing your game in Game Salad, explaining how you made it.
    2. Footage of a friend, parent or teacher playing and reacting to your game, with the screen, and their reaction visible.
  • Submit this video as evidence of your learning.
